The First Few Days Smoke Free

The First Few Days Smoke Free: Survival Guide The first few days can be the toughest when it comes to quitting smoking. There are many successful quitters who will tell you that that first 24 hours and those first few days are going to be your toughest. With each successful day, you learn new tools and gain more confidence so each successive day gets easier and easier. Here are some of their tips that they have shared to help others in those first few smoke free days. Make a firm commitment to not smoke no matter what. Find a support group that you can lean on in times of temptation. People who can help distract you or help you to steer away from tempting situations. Stock up on lots of vegetables that you can eat. Also good are apples, bananas, berries, grapefruits, and peaches. Keeping these foods around and not fattening items will help you to not gain weight in those first few days of being nicotine free. Carry a water bottle around with you so that you can drink and stay hydrated. Water is so important so that you can help your body flush out the toxins. Whenever the urge to smoke grabs you, grab your water bottle and take a few sips or take 5 minutes to do some deep breathing exercises. Attend support groups or find a group online that has people your age who are also quitting. Being able to chat about your experiences with others going through similar situations can really be a satisfying and freeing experience. Keep busy doing activities that you normally might do or find a hobby to occupy your mind and time. Reward yourself for each temptation you successfully avoid like doing something fun for you, reading a favorite book, listening to some music tapes, or taking a walk around the block. Indulge yourself in a day at the gym, or a pedicure, or massage. Minimize those withdrawal discomforts by eating a well balanced diet and drinking plenty of water. The first few days are the toughest and you just need to hang in there and take each day one at a time. Remember to reward yourself every time you avoid a temptation to light up. If there ever is a time to pamper yourself it is now, in the first few days of your quit smoking plan. Keep some of these on hand for when the cravings hit: toothpicks, tangerine Altoids, hard candy, a straw to suck, and a pack of gum. Remember that withdrawal is a temporary condition and this time too shall pass. If all else fails and you find yourself fingering a cigarette, remember that they all travel in packs! Keep your support groups close to you for the first few days and offer them bribes if you have to so that they will remain positive and not non-judgmental. Find out all you can about what it may be like when going through withdrawal and plan on how you will survive all that may happen. In other words come prepared for battle on days one through day four.
