The Connection Between Androgens and Male Menopause
The Connection Between Androgens and Male Menopause We all age from the moment we are born.
Aging brings about changes to our physical bodies as well as differences regarding our emotions and our mental
status. These changes in a male's body are due in part to androgens. Androgens are a certain class of hormones
found in the male body that are responsible for all of the masculine effects in the male human body. Testosterone
is one of the active androgens present in the male body. Other hormones that are androgens are: dihydroestosterone
(DHT), androstenedione, androsterediol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). In order for the male to have optimum
good health, these hormones must be at levels that are in harmony with each other. When a male hits puberty the
androgens are responsible for the voice becoming deeper, the shoulders becoming wider, deepening of his voice, and
the much desired facial hair growth. Around age 40 levels start to decline, especially the testosterone level.
Lower than normal testosterone levels can cause symptoms associated with male menopause. The symptoms of male
menopause can be reduced and even perhaps eliminated during treatment. The symptoms associated with androgen
decline are: * A loss of sexual drive (libido). Normal healthy rates of sexual interest are from 3 to 4 times a
week when the male is in his twenties to only once a week in his 50's to perhaps only 1 or 2 times each month by
the time he has reached his 70's. * Fatigue that is of a nature unusual and not associated with any other medical
condition. * Lost of concentration and increase in forgetfulness. There is also quite possibly a noticeable change
in the male's ability to focus. * There may be feelings surfacing in response to events in life that may be not in
proportion to a normal reaction. These feelings may be: anger, anxiety, depression and irritability. * Lower levels
of testosterone may cause an increase in body fat especially around the middle as well as a loss of muscle mass. *
He may experience difficulty sleeping and may miss out on the really deep period of sleep, which is when the body
repairs itself. Sleep difficulties can include: not being able to fall asleep, being restless or the repeated
pattern of waking up several times during the night. * Usually a male prides himself on being the one to solve
problems, having a certain amount of competency, and power to achieve task completion. A symptom of male menopause
that is particularly disconcerting is that they often become confused, go through periods of indecisiveness, and
lose self-confidence. The symptoms each male will exhibit will vary and can also present with different degrees of
intensity that change over time. No two males will have the exact same symptoms. The symptoms do seem to be
connected to the hormonal levels as determined by blood tests. Currently there are more studies being conducted to
determine more clearly the relationship between hormonal levels and the symptoms of male menopause.
Male Menopause And Depression
Men can have their FSH level tested too. The normal level of FSH in women whom are not menopausal is: 5 mIU/mL to 30 mIU/mL. The menopausal level of FSH in women is: 50 mIU/mL to 100 mIU/mL.
