Male Menopause How Does It Feel
Male Menopause: How Does It Feel? We all deal with growing older in different ways. We all
have our aches and pains. Our bodies betray us in similar ways and we all try to deny the passage of time and the
havoc wrecked on our bodies. The truth is that some of us grow older more gracefully than others. Is that
determined by genetics or lifestyle or do we influence how well our bodies age? Male menopause happens to men
gradually and without as much physical fanfare as it does with females. We are not as certain that men are going
through menopause and not just being cranky old men. How does it feel for a man to undergo something that affects
his home life, his job and his self-esteem? Most men will tell you that they feel helpless, confused, and unsure of
what is happening. Most men will try to make some sense of what is happening to them and try to fix it in anyway
that they can. This is also a time of life for men when their behavior is often explained always by "mid-life
crisis". This is usually earmarked by sudden urges to buy sleek new sports cars, or to date younger women. They
often want to make changes in their lives that will make them feel more virile, more macho. Their egos are easily
bruised when sexual dysfunction strikes. It is not uncommon to experience sleep disruptions, moodiness,
irritableness and difficulty concentrating. Fatigue sets in as a result of sleepless nights, or staying up worrying
about all the unusual symptoms they are feeling. The symptoms that may affect their work performance are short-term
memory loss, and an inability to concentrate. Sexual dysfunction makes the male feel inadequate, defective and
embarrassed. The physical signs of male menopause are equally devastating for a man. His pride in his strength and
endurance are both tested as lower testosterone weakens muscles and puts on weight making it more difficult to
complete physical tasks. Fatigue is also quite common due to weight gain, lack of sleep and lowered testosterone
levels. Many men suffer in silence afraid to admit that they are having problems with their sex drive and their
sexual abilities. Their female partners may blame their difficulties on too much work or too little sleep or worse
yet disinterest or perhaps they suspect an affair. Many relationship troubles stem from these symptoms of menopause
because the male behavior is misunderstood and the condition often is left undiagnosed. Men usually feel like they
have to fix what is wrong and will often try to place blame on something or someone when they cant understand why
they feel the way they do. Menopause is difficult for males and females to go through whether they are the ones
with the symptoms or they are living with someone going through menopause. The symptoms are real, the feelings are
real and the treatment, once diagnosed is real. What makes all the difference between going it alone and suffering
and seeking medical help is that there is someone who cares enough to pay attention and encourage the male to seek
medical attention.

A similar article ran in the Mental Health Weekly; 3/14/2005, Vol. 15 Issue 11, p 8 in which it was discussed that the symptoms that crumpy old men exhibit like anxiety, decreased libido, depression and moodiness can all be attributed to the condition known as "male menopause".
In April of 2004 Louisville Magazine ran an article in the Supplement, Vol 55, 0 8 by Katz, Barbara Myserson, titled: A Pause for Men? The article discusses the physical and psychological aspects of aging men and lower testosterone levels and the connection between the two.
