American Culture and Male Menopause
American Culture and Male Menopause As we begin moving into the 21st century in earnest, we
need only look around us to see how our society is dealing with the fact that the so-called baby-boomer generation
is growing undeniably older. This is the same generation that came of age in the 1960s and 1970s. and that
challenged many of the accepted cultural axioms that they felt were no longer useful or adequate. Because of their
impact on the nation as a whole, we began to see the social dynamic of older citizens trying to act like younger
people, since there appeared to be such a premium placed upon youthful outlook and thought. This impacted our land
on several levels and it caused profound adjustment of expectation right down to the clothes that people wore. The
music, philosophy, and even the eating habits of an entire younger generation of Americans found its way into the
lives of the rest of the country. It was, indeed, cool to be young and everybody wanted a piece of the action. And
who wouldnt? After all, the young people looked like they were having so much fun (even when they were mad and
shouting about something at a demonstration). There was an undeniable vitality and energy that seemed to infuse
that entire generation, pushing it forward to challenge accepted traditions and values. But time marches on and
certain trends became inevitable. The baby boomers got married, had kids, bought houses, went into business and
assimilated into the society they had seemingly changed. And here we stand thirty years later watching in
astonishment as their hairlines recede, their waists grow larger and their energy expresses itself in milder ways
than before. We knew the female boomers would be hitting menopause right about now, but what about the men? Meet
the first generation to experience male menopause and to actually understand what it is going through. For all
their passion, the boomer generation can also be quite insightful and willing to absorb reasonable concepts about
health and well-being. The very same students who demonstrated at their colleges in the 1960s are the ones who went
on to finish medical school and are now researching the fascinating field of human behavior. They are not content
to look at a contemporary in their fifties and simply write them off as getting older. They have an enthusiastic
desire to uncover the very secrets of ageing itself. Having unlocked so many of the genetic and hormonal keys that
dictate our behavior as we age, these boomer doctors are beginning to understand that as a man moves into his
fifties his body has probably been decreasing his testosterone production by one percent per year for the last
twenty years. They have connected the dots and are now turning to concepts like hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
to help middle-aged men to readjust their hormonal levels and live happier and more fulfilling lives. Even after
all these years, after all the changes and upheavals, they are, in their own ways, still fighting for a brighter
tomorrow.
