The Danger of Herbal Weight Loss Medicines
Those currently dieting in the United States are most likely doing so with the help of medicines, pills,
patches, or potions that need to be mixed and drunk at certain times of the day.
While at first glance there might be nothing wrong with the idea of getting a little pharmaceutical help with
weight loss which in the United States is considered to be a desperate necessity due to the high incident rate of
heart disease and other food related ailments, a problem that arises when alternative means for weight loss are
explored.
Even though prescription drugs are not necessarily safer than their over the counter cousins, at least a
physician is monitoring the patient and her or his progress.
With the dietary supplements which have become an industry that is growing exponentially and over which there is
little if any oversight, the danger of herbal weight loss medicines becomes obvious when isolated
incidents of consumers experiencing adverse reactions are making national headlines.
Yet for each and every case that does make the evening news, remember that there are probably hundreds, if not
more, that do not get any airtime whatsoever.
To this end, here are some facts about the danger of herbal weight loss medicines you will be wise to
keep in mind:
1. The danger of herbal weight loss medicines is not necessarily found in their ingredients but
instead in how these ingredients might affect other substances you are currently ingesting, such as prescription
medicines, drugs, or herbal supplements of a different kind.

2. Even though there is a lot of folklore that suggest Chinese herbal supplements have
centuries of wisdom behind them, a substance claiming to be part and parcel of that Chinese wisdom cannot prove
such claims. It is up to the consumer to decide if the drug is safe and appropriate for them to use.
3. While there may be some benefits to using herbal weight loss medicines, the danger of
relying solely on them for weight loss rests in the fact that more often than not this reliance leads to a failure
with respect to lifestyle changes required to maintain or further weight loss.
4. The quality of herbal weight loss medicines varies greatly and disreputable sellers have
taken to cutting corners and using ingredients that are either of low quality or so diluted that the original
benefit is next to impossible to realize.
Just because a drug is an OTC, does not mean that it is without risks. OTC medications can still present issues such as side effects, drug interactions with other medications you may be taking, and some may not be intended for use during pregnancy, while nursing or when taking other medications or street drugs. Just because a drug is not a prescription drug does not mean that it can have serious consequences when it is not taken as directed, or if it is taken with other medications or if it not taken in the manner that it was intended. 5. The promises made by those who sell such pills, potions, or supplements are sometimes very misleading and
although not technically false, they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to fully disclosing the potential harm
these substances may cause to the human body.
6. Finally, even if the herbs contained in the capsules are safe and even if the drug is
supposed to work well, the method used to manufacture it might taint the substances with dangerous heavy metals and
even chemical components known for their toxicity.
Do not suppose that just because a drug is advertised as being herbal and thus by implication natural, it is
truly naturally derived and processed.
