Popular Medications and Their Uses
There are some medications that we are familiar with because we use them often.
They are popular because they are effective and are readily available as over-the-counter medications or are
commonly prescribed by doctors.
Just because they are popular does not mean that individuals are familiar with what they are used for or even
what the side effects of using them may be.
Here are a few of the medications that are popular along with what they are used for and any expected side
effects that may be experienced.
Acetaminophen is one popular pain reliever that also reduces fever. A popular brand name of acetaminophen is
Tylenol.
Amoxicillin is a popular antibiotic that is effective against different bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae,
and other infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, and throat infections.
Amoxicillin is also used when treating urinary tract infections, skin infections even gonorrhea.
Codeine is a pain reliever that is used in both mild and severe pain. Side effects of codeine can be
light-headedness, dizziness, vomiting, shortness of breath and sleepiness. Tylenol with Codeine Elixir is a popular
brand name.
Ibuprofen is another popular pain reliever that is also an anti-inflammatory drug. It is used to relieve mild
pain or pain from injury, arthritis, and pain from menstrual cramps. Brand names that are popular are Advil, Motrin
and Nuprin.
Many medications used to treat infertility are given subcutaneously. The injections are easy and take about 10 minutes or less to accomplish. Drugs and Medicine |
Lithium is a popular medication used to treat bipolar disorder and also depression. It normally takes about 3
weeks for the full effects of lithium to affect the individual taking it. Brand names used are Eskalith and
Lithobid.
Individuals suffering from arthritis, lupus, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis may be familiar with
methylprednisolone, the brand name, Medrol. This medication is a synthetic corticosteroid used to reduce
inflammation.
Antihistamines such as Claritin are used to help dry the sinuses, and prevent sneezing and runny noses. One side
effect of antihistamines is that they often make you feel discombobulated or sleepy.
These non-prescription drugs are also called, “over-the-counter drugs”, because they do not require a prescription to purchase. Some of these medications may have at one time been a prescription drug, but are not available without a prescription. from the foods that we eat. The side effects from these types of drugs are that they may give you stomach pains or
fatigue.
Those suffering from Herpes may take Valtrex to slow the growth of the herpes virus in order for your body to
have the chance to fight off the virus. You may experience nausea, or even diarrhea while taking this drug.
Males suffering from erectile dysfunction may turn to Levitra to relax muscles in order to increase blood flow
to the male sex organ. One side effect of using this medication is that they may experience warmth or redness to
the facial area, and possibly a stuffy nose.
One popular depression drug is, Zoloft, which is used to balance the chemicals in the brain responsible for
depression and anxiety. Feeling nervous or drowsy is just two of the known side effects for those using this
drug.
