Politics, Education And
Over The Counter Remedies
Politics, Education and Over the Counter Remedies
Most common during election years, healthcare on a national and local level is always hotly debated and while
some are suggestion a complete revamping of the system.
Others are championing the idea of heightening the education that goes into training children and young adults
about the most commonly experienced health issues.
Though for some this has become synonymous with sex education in the schools, the very real fact that education
on the much more mundane conditions - such as constipation, heartburn, pain management, and dehydration that
are nonetheless also very important is rarely if ever discussed, is a disservice to the country at large.
Politics, education and over the counter remedies appear to engage in a somewhat uneasy alliance in that the
latter are tacitly approved by the former two as bona fide methodologies of dealing with common health issues.
Yet when following this kind of logic to its conclusion, it is doubtful that as a whole the general public is
benefiting from the plethora of over the counter medicines and before long these drugs will stop working and the
consumer will seek out physicians for more potent and hopefully effective prescription medicines.
Giving a medication by transdermal preparation. Subcutaneous administration Intravenous preparation Intramuscular administration is usually by injection Epidural is usually by catheter Sublingual is under the tongue Rectal is one of the least favorite routes of medication administration Oral medications are commonly used when individuals need pain relief, vitamins, laxatives, allergy relief, and antibiotics. Thus perhaps an overhaul of the healthcare system is not as crucial as an overhaul as health education is
handled on the school level.
After all, if consumers had the knowledge and expertise to understand that many of the over the counter
medicines do more harm than good and that more often than not with just a bit of know how and naturally available
compounds many ailments could be avoided or remedied just as well, if not more effectively, than with prescription
drugs or the harsher shelved options in the pharmacy aisles of the local supermarket.
Does it not stand to reason that these consumers will become healthier as a whole? In very real terms, enabling
the average consumer to have a deeper understanding of the workings of the human body will sooner rather than later
have a very real effect on the way politics, education, and over the counter remedies as well as prescription drugs
are viewed.
Consider the many problems which may be avoided by no longer having consumers rely on harsh chemical laxatives
or over the counter sleep aids that have serious side effects and may even foster a sense of dependency on the
substances in order to achieve normal bodily functions!
Each OTC category works on a different set of symptoms. Pain relievers are either nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, called NSAIDs, or they are aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen or also acetaminophen. They all relieve pain, but work in different ways. Drugs and Medicine |
In the same vein, it will prevent many a young woman from indiscriminately choosing herbal weight loss pills and
tinctures without understanding that some of these substances may do more harm than good to the human body.
Imagine the young athletes who will no longer fall for the over inflated claims of an alleged health food
industry that seeks to sell the latest powder, drink, energy pill, or other supplement which may have little effect
or very real, long lasting, and sometimes lethal outcomes!
Truly education must be the front line where an understanding about medicines, prescription drugs and also over
the counter remedies is achieved.
