Indigent patient drug programs
It is possible to obtain free prescription medications in the United States.
Currently the average cost of a prescription is approximately $26.00 and with most patients over 65 taking
at least 5 medications daily, on average elderly patients are paying a minimum of $130 a month just for
medicines.
Someone on a fixed budget would have difficulty coming up with that and some medicines can be at a higher cost
than $26.00.
There are some pharmaceutical companies who care about those who are indigent or on small fixed incomes so there
are companies who offer prescription drugs for free or at a reduced price.
The American Heart Association began a list of companies offering free or reduced medications.
Some pharmaceutical companies will discuss their programs only with physicians or health care professionals.
Other companies can be contacted through the American Heart Association.
There is a handout that is titled, "Drugs, Free or Low Cost". Call 1-800-242-8721 for more information about
this handout.
There is a new program called, The Partnership for Prescription Assistance. It is sponsored by a coalition of
U.S. Pharmaceutical manufacturers, which launched in April of 2005. Call 1-888-477-2669 for more information about
this program.

Anyone from age 16 to 100 can request information on low-cost or free prescription drug programs by asking your
local pharmacist.
You can also ask your pharmacist about who has the best prices on over-the-counter medications.
The Purpose of Medications All of us have taken medications at one time or another at some point in our lives. Medications were given to us, or we took them ourselves for various reasons. Medications are used to make us feel better by reducing fever, pain or symptoms of a disease. Medications are supposed to carry benefits for us but they can also carry many risks that may not make us feel better, they may even cause injury to us. Drugs and Medicine |
There are also Websites that contain information about patient assistance programs such as needymeds.com that
contains information about 1000 drugs.
You can also compare prices at different online drugstores by going to destinationrx.com. In March of 2003 the
pharmaceutical industry launched helpingpatients.org a database to help needy patients get free medicines.
Give your doctor a list of all the prescriptions you are currently taking along with any herbal remedy or
supplements. Ask if there are generics for any of the prescriptions you are taking, or if there are any discount
drug programs at local stores.
There are some drugstores offering $4 prices for several hundred commonly used prescription drugs. Find out if
any drugstores are offering these programs in your area.
You doctor may know of such programs. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor for samples. Pharmaceutical company
representatives give all doctors drug samples. Also, ask if there is an over-the-counter substitute that may be
cheaper than the prescription drug.
All honorably discharged veterans can call 800-827-1000 or visit va.gov for information about prescription and
medical care.
There are three categories of drug interactions that include: Two or more drugs reacting to each other such as taking a sleeping pill and an allergy pill at the same time Another interaction can be between a drug you are taking and a beverage such as alcohol having an effect on certain drugs that will make you sleepy The last category is when a medical condition has a potentially harmful effect on the medication such as experiencing an increase in blood pressure when taking a certain decongestant that could make someone with high blood pressure be in a harmful condition Drugs and Medicine |
Pay attention to newspapers, magazine ads or articles about prescription programs. Ask neighbors and friends,
you may be surprised what information there is available.
You may even find some community seminars given by churches or civic clubs or other non-profit organizations
concerning available drug programs in the community.
The Partnership for Prescription Assistance brings together America's pharmaceutical companies, doctors,
healthcare providers, patient advocacy organizations and community groups to help those who lack prescription
coverage so that they can receive the medications that they need through the public or private programs that are
available for them.
You can contact the program by calling 1-888-477-2669 or by going to the Website at www.pparx.org/Intro.php
