Medications For Back Pain
Kevin Caldbeck
It is estimated that approximately 80% of people will have some sort of lower back problem during their life. Most of the time these problems will go away with time and proper care, and not have any long last effects.
Your back is made up of bone, muscles, nerves and other soft tissues. Just about every move we make depends upon our back being healthy. When something goes amiss it can severely hamper the person's lifestyle.
Unfortunately, back pain can happen to anyone, at any time. This pain can cause mild discomfort, to a very severe pain that seriously keeps the person from doing anything.
Common triggers for Back Pain include:
- poor posture,
- lack of exercise,
- standing or bending down for long periods,
- sitting in a chair that doesn’t provide enough back support,
- sleeping on a bed that doesn’t provide enough back support,
- lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy, or doing these things in the wrong way,
- a trip or fall.
- automobile accidents,
- being overweight,
Many of these things can be avoided with proper training about protecting your back.
Medications For Back Pain There are many medications for those who suffer from back pain. When a person is in pain, they have problems sleeping, concentrating at work, and in some cases, become depressed and withdrawn spending less time with family and friends. After back surgery, these conditions can worsen. After other therapies such as massage, temperature, and acupuncture fail, medications are often necessary to ease the pain and reduce swelling associated with the surgery. These medications make it easier for a person to sleep which will reduce stress and end their depression.
Medication is not for everyone. It is important to tell the doctor of any allergies to medications and food that one might have experienced in the past. Taking medication that one is allergic to might cause a person to suffer a heart attack or stroke. Always read about possible side effects before taking any pain medication.
Acetaminophen is the most widely used pain medication. It can be bought over the counter and is used to reduce swelling of inflamed muscles. A doctor will tell a person to read the dosage amounts on the bottle and to follow all instructions. Medications should be taken with care. By following the instructions, one will begin to feel better and the back pain will be reduced. There are other medications people take after back surgery, but some have been recalled due to unforeseen side effects. It is important to consider all options before settling on medication because of such side effects. For the most part, though, medication can help a person sleep and begin to recuperate after surgery or an accident.
Asking a pharmacist is also a good idea when shopping for the right medication for back pain. There are many products that contain acetaminophen on the market. Some are better for those who are having trouble sleeping, which seems to be the biggest complaint besides pain for people with back problems. Pharmacists know which medications are the safest to take and will offer advice on others to try in case one needs to try another medication. Some medications should be taken in conjunction with physical therapy. Hot and cold compresses are more effective when medication is taken between treatments. The medication can speed up the healing process while the compresses reduce swelling and make a person fee better.
Depression is an all too common symptom of back pain. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe an anti-depressant to curb the depression and make a person feel better. These drugs can be dangerous when taken with other medications. These drugs can also be addictive. It is important to know all the risks involved before agreeing to the treatment. Sometimes the depression will fade in a few weeks. If it persists, something must be done to help the person make a full recovery. Anti-depressants can help those who understand the risks and will use the medication wisely. Addiction to these medications and other pain killers can be worse than the original injury. If at all possible, try to get out of the depressed state by remembering that the surgery was necessary and that being fit mentally is needed for the body to make a full recovery. Seek therapy if the depression continues.
