Living With Someone Who Has Back Pain

Kevin Caldbeck

It is estimated that approximately 80% of people will have some sort of lower back problem during their life.  Most of the time these problems will go away with time and proper care, and not have any long last effects.

Your back is made up of bone, muscles, nerves and other soft tissues. Just about every move we make depends upon our back being healthy.  When something goes amiss it can severely hamper the person's lifestyle.

Unfortunately, back pain can happen to anyone, at any time. This pain can cause mild discomfort, to a very severe pain that seriously keeps the person from doing anything.

Common triggers for Back Pain include:

  • poor posture,
  • lack of exercise,
  • standing or bending down for long periods,
  • sitting in a chair that doesn’t provide enough back support,
  • sleeping on a bed that doesn’t provide enough back support,
  • lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy, or doing these things in the wrong way,
  • a trip or fall.
  • automobile accidents,
  • being overweight,

Many of these things can be avoided with proper training about protecting your back.

Living With Someone Who Has Back Pain

Back pain can affect not only people who are suffering first hand, but also those who live with the person. When someone is experiencing back pain they tend to complain often and cannot perform simple functions like picking up a shoe. For people with chronic back pain who have had problems for years, those who live with them get used to having to do most of the housework, grocery shopping, and other tasks that need physical stamina to accomplish. This does not mean that a person who has back pain will never be able to carry groceries again, this just means that they need to be careful not to lift heavy items without help and when back pain is worse than usual.

People with back problems usually need more attention because they do not feel well. They can get angry and become depressed when they can’t go outside. It can be rough at first, but people will get used to periodic times when they need to remain in bed. This can make other people in the household feel sad that they could not be of more help. People with back pain cannot do much except follow their doctor’s orders and rest.

If a person has to have back surgery, there must be someone afterwards that can help them recover. Recovery time could be a few weeks to a few months depending on the surgery and how invasive it was. If a person has to have more surgery, they will need more time to recover. People with patience are the ones who will be able to help a person suffering from back pain the most.

Back pain can be caused by many things from poor posture at work to an injury playing sports. Old injuries that happened when a person was younger may affect a person later on in life. Medications can be given to ease the pain, but sometimes a person will get depressed and need to take anti-depressants. For those living with a depressed person, they may feel trapped and confused. They do not want to make the person feel worse, but they are afraid of hurting their feelings or making the pain worse. There are support groups out there for people who live with depressed people. Groups who can offer advice or just listen. Sometimes being able to talk while other listen helps.

People in pain are not happy most of the time. They need special attention and cannot give back all that they receive. Over time, back pain can cease or at least become less painful. For those who provide care to a person with back problems, it is important not to forget about their feelings of hopelessness or feelings of being trapped. In a sense they are, at least for a little while. After a person recovers, other people in the household can go on and live their lives. When a person overcomes their depression, everyone around them begins to feel better. Living with a person who has back problems can be a challenge.
