Chiropractors and Back Pain

Kevin Caldbeck

It is estimated that approximately 80% of people will have some sort of lower back problem during their life.  Most of the time these problems will go away with time and proper care, and not have any long last effects.

Your back is made up of bone, muscles, nerves and other soft tissues. Just about every move we make depends upon our back being healthy.  When something goes amiss it can severely hamper the person's lifestyle.

Unfortunately, back pain can happen to anyone, at any time. This pain can cause mild discomfort, to a very severe pain that seriously keeps the person from doing anything.

Common triggers for Back Pain include:

  • poor posture,
  • lack of exercise,
  • standing or bending down for long periods,
  • sitting in a chair that doesn’t provide enough back support,
  • sleeping on a bed that doesn’t provide enough back support,
  • lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy, or doing these things in the wrong way,
  • a trip or fall.
  • automobile accidents,
  • being overweight,

Many of these things can be avoided with proper training about protecting your back.

Chiropractors and Back Pain

There is much debate as to whether chiropractors help the body to relax or if it is a scam to steal money from injured people. Many doctors do not recommend chiropractors because they feel there is insufficient proof that they can help the body. Other doctors as well as patients of chiropractors disagree. They feel that by manipulating the body and working out the knots, realigning the back so that a person can improve their posture does help a person with back pain.

Regardless of public opinion, negative or positive, chiropractors have become more popular over the years due to the number of people who visit them. There are more and more offices opening for business each year promising to help people wend their back pain suffering. There are a few ways chiropractors achieve this. First, they will have the patient lie on a table and they will realign the spine by repositioning the body.

This can include pulling at certain joints, turning the neck, and moving the hips. They will assign simple stretches to help a person keep their body in alignment. For people with posture problems which lead to back pain, they will watch the person walk, and then have them sit in a chair as they would if they were at the workplace. The chiropractor may suggest different ways to sit as well as exercises to improve posture. This can help certain muscles in the back relax.

Some people go to chiropractors once a week, others twice a year. It depends on the severity of the pain and how long it will take to correct. Sometimes the pain cannot be corrected. If a person was in a serious accident and injured their spinal cord or vertebrae, there is permanent damage which may hurt periodically or everyday. A chiropractor can teach them how to stretch in order to reduce the pain, but it will always be there. This is why some people do not believe a chiropractor can actually help a person who is suffering from back pain.

Finding a qualified chiropractor is best through word of mouth. Most offices are small and do not advertise too often. If people recommend a chiropractor, then pay them a visit. Sometimes chiropractors can ease the pain for a little while, which is enough for some people. Chiropractors are not doctors. They cannot replace a doctor. A doctor should be seen if the pain continues. Other measures such as medication or further surgery may be necessary to end a person’s suffering.

Back pain for some is an ongoing battle. They try different therapies, medications, and chiropractors, but the pain persists. By staying as active as possible and eating the right foods, a person will be able to help themselves. Medications can help a person sleep at night and lessen the anxiety felt with the onset of pain. Sometimes chiropractors can suggest certain poses or exercises that will help reduce the back pain felt. This advice is worth visiting a chiropractor at least once.
