Back Pain Which Exercises can Help

Kevin Caldbeck

It is estimated that approximately 80% of people will have some sort of lower back problem during their life.  Most of the time these problems will go away with time and proper care, and not have any long last effects.

Your back is made up of bone, muscles, nerves and other soft tissues. Just about every move we make depends upon our back being healthy.  When something goes amiss it can severely hamper the person's lifestyle.

Unfortunately, back pain can happen to anyone, at any time. This pain can cause mild discomfort, to a very severe pain that seriously keeps the person from doing anything.

Common triggers for Back Pain include:

  • poor posture,
  • lack of exercise,
  • standing or bending down for long periods,
  • sitting in a chair that doesn’t provide enough back support,
  • sleeping on a bed that doesn’t provide enough back support,
  • lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads that are too heavy, or doing these things in the wrong way,
  • a trip or fall.
  • automobile accidents,
  • being overweight,

Many of these things can be avoided with proper training about protecting your back.

Back Pain Which Exercises can Help

If you are suffering from back pain you are probably very reluctant to even think about exercising. But this can many times be a big mistake. Not only can certain exercises help cure your back pain, but these exercises can also help to prevent future problems that may have otherwise occurred.

First off, muscle stretching can be one of the most effective ways to heal tightened back muscles. It is very important to shorten and lengthen the muscular tissue in your back as a way to prevent pulling fibers.

The most important thing to remember is that you do not want to ever start exercising your back until you are far enough into the healing process. If you jump into exercising prematurely you may end up making your problem worse, and relegating yourself to more time on bed rest.

If you are not sure as to which exercises to use, you can always consult with your doctor. The exercises listed below are simply some of the more common ones that are done by people who are looking to strengthen their back muscles.

Sit ups have always been a great way to increase back strength. They should always be completed correctly in order to avoid traction to the spine. You can start out by placing your knees on a chair so that you form a 90 degree angle with your legs and hips. You will want to support your neck with your hands. But even though you will be supporting your neck, you do not want to pull on it. This can cause muscle strains in both your neck and back. You will raise up to approximately 30 degrees, and then slowly go back down. Make sure that you concentrate on feeling the strain in your abdominal muscles, not your back.

The back flexion stretch is a great way to exercise your back, and give your muscles the workout they need to stay loose. This exercise is done by starting out on your back, and then pulling your knees to your chest while at the same time bringing your head forward until you form a “ball like” position. You should hold this position for approximately 10 seconds and then release. During this exercise you should not feel any pain whatsoever. It is a stretch that is intended to relieve tension in your back. If you feel any pain you will want to immediately desist, and look into what is causing your discomfort.

If you are looking for a complete list of back exercises and stretches there are many books and internet sites that will be able to assist you. Exercises and stretches can go a long way in helping to prevent future injury. By implementing a program where you do these exercises on a regular basis, you will most definitely decrease the odds of suffering another back injury.

Find the back exercises and stretches that are right for you, and get started today. You will be happy that you did in the long run.
