Obesity,
the growing epidemic!
Obesity seems to be an epidemic in
today’s world of less exercise and fast, fatty food.
It is estimated that 97 million of Americans are
currently overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.
In addition, obesity rates have increased over sixty
percent in the last ten years. Obesity not only
causes havoc on a persons health, it also is very
expensive. The obese patient can expect to spend a
lot more for doctor visits, as well as for medications
used to treat the complications of their
obesity.
As new technology has become available
to surgeons, weight loss surgery is now much easier and
a lot less risky, than in the past.
For a quite some time, weight loss
surgery has been considered a very drastic solution for
those persons dealing with obesity. In the past weight
loss surgery was considered to be risky, and would often
involve cutting into the intestines and stapling, or
re-routing them.
Health and Psychological problems related
to Obesity.
Being overweight or obese can cause many
health and psychological problems. Those people
that are carrying around extra weight have proven to be
more prone to experiencing heart problems, diabetes,
high blood pressure, increased risk of stroke,
joint problems, arthritis and many other health
problems. People who are morbidly obese will often have
a shorter lifespan, as well. Losing the excess
weight can often reverse the conditions and can help
prevent them from developing in the future.
Traditional Weight Loss Methods do
not always work.
There are millions of people around the
world that have tried diet, exercising, hypnoses,
acupuncture, and even behavior modification in order to
shed pounds. Unfortunately, these do not always
work, especially for the morbidly obese who seem to have
greater difficulty in losing weight, and in many cases,
weight loss surgery will be the only option available to
them.
